Introduction to puppy training

Welcoming a new furry friend into your home is an exciting time, but when it comes to training puppies, the following weeks can be a huge adjustment for everybody involved. We’ve introduced our puppy school program so your pup can harness the benefits of early socialisation with convenient and interactive pet parent education. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Don’t wait to find out, book in now with Best Friends Pets.

What to expect at puppy training school

Before getting started with either of our puppy training programs, you’ll need to ensure that your pup is up to date with their vaccinations. Don’t forget to bring along a copy of their vaccination certificate - up to date documentation must be provided to the instructor before you can kick off puppy classes

What does puppy training look like?

Puppy school is the first step in your puppy training journey. Bring your favourite furbaby along and watch them develop key socialisation skills in a safe, supportive and controlled environment.

During your time at puppy school, you and your pooch will learn a range of basic commands including sit, stay, drop, recall, speak, quiet, listen, and leave it. In the final week prior to graduation, you’ll also learn two fun tricks - roll over and shake!

Our specially trained instructors are there to educate puppy parents and help build a harmonious relationship with their pooch. Set them up for success while preventing undesirable behaviours - nobody wants to replace chewed up rugs every two years!

COVID-safe puppy school

Just because you’re stuck in lockdown doesn’t mean that your puppy’s behaviour should fall off your training radar. Best Friends Pets is dedicated to safe, playful and well mannered puppies, even under lockdown orders. We’ve developed our COVID-safe puppy school program so that your little buddy can learn to sit, stay and roll over without leaving home.

Stage 1: Join Our Zoom Puppy Play Dates

Our COVID-safe puppy school program includes 4x 30 minute puppy play dates to aid in socialising your paw pal. We can accommodate up to twenty-one customers in any session, covering a number of common puppy behavioural issues. While your bundle of fur gets to know other puppies, you’ll meet other parents, soaking up a few tricks and tips in our interactive Q&A sessions with a canine behavioural expert.

Stage 2: Online Pet Leadership Sessions

Session 1: The importance of appropriate rewards

This includes learning how to reward your puppy, practicing giving commands, the importance of mat training, and how to reward your puppy when they display desirable behaviours.

Session 2: Curb undesirable behaviours

Tackle tricky puppy problems like biting, barking and jumping, introducing alternative behaviours and rewarding progress. You’ll also learn how to troubleshoot toilet training, as well as the benefits of crate training your pooch.

Puppy Safe Hygiene

We implement vet standard hygiene practices and protocols, using veterinary standard disinfectant in between each puppy class so you can be assured that your pup is in a safe environment when they’re in our care.

Puppy school pricing guide

Sign up for our in-store puppy school program and pay $139. Alternatively, if you’re currently in lockdown or under restrictions, our COVID-safe program is just $99, covering all the basics. Ready to start? We require full payment in advance of your first class. Find out more information here!

Playdate Q&A

Puppy play dates are the first step toward established puppy obedience training, ensuring your dog learns the basics before they enter a strict learning environment.

How many puppies attend each session?

Your barky little buddy will meet 4-8 other puppies, learning how to interact confidently (and appropriately) in a relaxed and safe environment.

What about dog sizes? Are small dogs grouped together?

While we understand some pet parents may be concerned about little dogs mixing with bigger breeds, we try to include a mix of all shapes and sizes to reflect what your dog may see on walks, at the beach or during a play at the park.

Do we supply progress updates?

At the end of each play date, your instructor will give you a quick debrief, covering how your puppy is progressing, things to work on at home and the type of behaviours your puppy displays when you’re not around.

Are puppy play dates the same as obedience training?

No! Think of puppy play dates as kindergarten and obedience training as formal schooling. Both are important, and while the playdates lead into obedience training, an intensive 12 week program is not the same thing as teaching your pup to sit and play nice with other dogs. The bottom line? Obedience training builds on what your dog begins with Best Friends Pets.
