How to Teach a Puppy to Sit (with Video)

Puppy Puppy Training & Behaviour
Teaching your puppy to sit

Hi, everyone, I'm Laura V and this is my good buddy, Teddy. And we're doing a little bit of puppy training. All thanks to Best Friends Pets. Now today I want to teach you some of the basics, and that is to teach your dog to sit.

Now your puppy already knows how to sit. They've been doing this well before you have ever asked them to do it. But what we wanna do is we wanna put it on command because it can keep your puppy safe if you need to get them to sit. It's really good basic manners. And also, it's very good for teaching your puppy impulse control. Most puppies are not known for their self control. So it's definitely worthwhile teaching them a little bit of that.

So what we do is we need a really high value trait and you will need to find that out by asking your puppy what they love and what they're most motivated by. Sometimes you need to do a little bit of trial and error with a whole bunch of rewards. I think I have found Teddy's favorite reward here. So hopefully he's going to want to work for me looks like he is because he's already sat and I haven't even asked him to do that. And that's the best kind of training, teaching your puppy to choose to work with you, rather than work with you because they have to.

So let's see if I can try to lure him to sit so we can put it on a command. Hey, Teddy Bear. Hey, buddy. So I have the high value treat in my hand, I just pop it over his head until his bum hits the ground, and I release the food into his mouth, I might give him a little bit more than what he was expecting, so that he remembers that sitting down is a really good idea the next time.

It's really good to also take your puppy free, so to get out of position so you can do a little bit of training again, also remembering to keep it nice and short and sweet.

So let's try it again. We get the food we lure him by putting above his little head. Sit. Yes, reward.

You might notice I said the word yes. And that just lets him know that he's done the right thing. And that a reward is very soon on its way Free let him out of position again and we'll try it one more time

As soon as your puppy stops learning this you can actually give them their food from the other hand, because puppies are very smart. And if they can see that you don't have food in their hand you're luring them with they may not actually want to work with you.

So let's see if we can get him to do this and also put their behavior on command. I also just want to reward that quickly because the fact that he chose to sit for me is like the jackpot.

Ah, puppy come, come on can you come and get him out of position Good boy, sit, yes reward.

See how I gave him the food from the other hand, then he's gonna learn that he doesn't have to rely on the food being in the hand that I'm luring him with. Free release him.

Guys, this is something you do just a really short spurts. You make it fun. Don't make it too arduous and make sure that you're having a great time as well. This is a great way to build trust and respect and a beautiful bond with your puppy.
