Fireworks scary for our furry friends — 30 Dec 2011

Attention Pet Parents!  With New Year’s Eve approaching, please remember that our furry friends don’t like fireworks.  While city fireworks may seem far away from our own backyards, pets may still be nervous about unexpected noise.  However it is the illegal backyard fireworks that can be very scary, as well as being unpredictable when set off my amateurs.

Annually, illegal fireworks being set off on New Year’s Eve have a devastating effects on the pets we love, with shelters like The Lost Dogs’ Home being left to pick up the pieces.  “Last year, we had 145 animals come into the shelter over 24 hours on January 1, many of whom were severely traumatised, with worn pads on their feet, and suffering badly from exhaustion,” said the Home’s General Manager of Operations, Sue Conroy.

When pets escape backyards in a panic to get away from fireworks, lives can be lost if they make it out onto busy roads and streets.
If you are worried that your pet may become anxious without you this New Year’s Eve, try to leave your pet indoors where it will be less noisy and your pet will feel safe and secure.

Visit The Lost Dogs Home website for further information: http://dogshome.com/new-years-eve-fireworks

Steff Campbell and Mougli need the publics help — 14 Apr 2011

Steff Campbell needs help to bring a dumped kitten (Mougli) that's survived appalling cruelty back to health. Mougli needs an operation for a shattered pelvis, which Ms Campbell can't afford herself, so she's called on members of the public who can empathise with the kitten's plight to help raise enough cash along side her and Best Friends.

Steff Campbell, 22, who works at Geelong's Best Friends Pet Super Centre, was shocked when a man brought a badly injured black and white cat that he'd found dumped on the side of the road this week into the centre's vet clinic.Steff Campbell with Mougli

The man had spotted the cat left for dead along with two other kittens, believed to be its siblings, in a garbage bag while driving.

The two other kittens were dead, appearing to have been run over or beaten, while the third was crying out in pain on the ground.

"He's the most beautiful little fluffy gorgeous thing," the kitten-smitten Ms Campbell said. "When I saw him in the shop, I just thought 'I'll take him'. I'm a full-time student and I can't really afford to, but he just looked at me and when I held him, he started purring and I knew I couldn't leave him there.

"He's much happier now, but you can imagine the trauma he's been through, it's horrible."

The university student said she couldn't take the cat which she's named Mougli to the pound, as it was injured and would be euthanised there, so she's vowed to adopt it and take it to a vet.

Ms Campbell said the man had done the right thing by bringing the stricken cat to the pet shop, and she urged others to do anything possible to dispose of stray or unwanted cats humanely.

"To avoid having unwanted kittens, make sure your cat is de-sexed ... and if you need to get rid of them, take them to a vet, a pet shop or an animal shelter," she said.

RSPCA Inspector Hugh Robinson said he feared the cat and its siblings may have been placed in the garbage bag and bashed before being dumped, and slammed their treatment as "an absolute disgrace".

He warned people convicted of aggravated animal cruelty could face fines up to $28,000 or spend up to two years jail. Anyone with information should call the RSPCA on 9224 2222.

To donate to Mougli's operation, email Ms Campbell at all_the_white_horses@ hotmail.com.

Best Friends donates $17,160 to Pet Flood Relief — 02 Mar 2011

Best Friends have raised $17,160 for the pet victims of the QLD & VIC Floods!!!

A huge THANK YOU to our customers who very generously donated half of this amount through Pet e-Cash gift vouchers.  Best Friends stores were very happy to match this generosity dollar-for-dollar to assist those pet victims of the recent natural disasters in Victoria & Queensland.

The fundraising has been split between Victorian and Queensland animal welfare organisations that have been directly affected by the floods and have worked tirelessly for the wellbeing of animals, pets and their families in those flood ravaged areas, including:

RSPCA QLD:
The main RSPCA headquarters and welfare facility in Fairfield was wiped out by the Brisbane floods.  Our donation of will help rebuild and refurbish this vital service for pets in Brisbane.

Animal Rescue QLD:  This new organisation was born from the Brisbane Relief Centre and has worked tirelessly to rehome and foster abandoned pets affected by the floods.  It has been recommended and endorsed by the Brisbane City Council as the best way to get funds to those affected pets and the Best Friends donation will help them set up and continue this great work.

The Lost Dogs Home has been affected 2-fold by the floods at their Campaspe Facility  and also, more recently in the Cranbourne Shelter. The funds raised for the VIC floods will help rebuild and refurbish these facilities as well as provide essentials and comfort to those pets sheltering there from flood affected areas.

OUR VET ALERT - Mosquitos & Fleas (Cats & Dogs) — 01 Feb 2011

Have you heard the BUZZ?
The unseasonal rains we have endured in the early Summer has brought with it considerable humidity and stagnant surface water. The stagnant waters have been a rich breeding ground for mosquitoes which can have a serious impact for your pets.

Fleas are especially prevalent in the summer season but even more so this year as they “love” the humidity. These fleas were deposited as eggs over the last months and then the ideal weather conditions have lead to this sudden surge. With this sudden population increase it will take some time and effort to keep your pets flea free. Fleas cause skin irritations, potential tapeworm infection, bites to the human household and general annoyance to all around.

There are three situations that may affect your pets.

1.    If you are seeing fleas on your pets now you need an integrated program to bring this problem under control. This may involve the use of products like CAPSTAR or COMFORTIS or FRONTLINE and potentially also using an environment treatment to help the immediate problem. Our nurses and the staff at Best Friends are the best people to help you plan an effective campaign.

2.    If you have been using flea control products consistently you may be fortunate enough to have your pets already protected. But ensure you protect against all parasites.  As circumstances change so will the appropriate medications. Please speak to our nurses and they will inform you what is best for your pets.

3.    If you are presently not using any treatments but believe your pets are flea free, believe us when we say this is only a matter of time. Prevention is better than cure and a program created for your pets by our helpful staff will help your pets stay parasite free.

Please see any of the team at Best Friends and Our Vet in store for more details and advice on how to protect your pet.

OUR VET ALERT - Mosquitos & Dogs — 01 Feb 2011

Have you heard the BUZZ?

The unseasonal wet has encouraged the mosquito population to explode and in doing so presents some REAL problems for our pets.

This year, more than ever, heartworm is a threat to your dogs.  Mosquitos transfer Heartworm (a worm that actually lives in the dog heart and causes many life-threatening effects) from infected dogs to unprotected dogs.

Often life threatening heart conditions can occur before any clinical signs are apparent. Yet heartworm is easy to test for and the staff at Our Vet will help you arrange these procedures.   In February we are providing this test for $20, a saving of $15, to help you protect your dogs health. See our latest catalogue.

Once you have established that your dog is not infected by Heartworm you can maintain protection with specific products available at Best Friends. Come in and talk to the staff in store and they will direct you to the  most appropriate treatment.

OUR VET ALERT - (Geelong Advertiser 11 Jan 2011) - Mosquitos & Rabbits — 01 Feb 2011

Have you heard the BUZZ?

The unseasonal wet has encouraged the mosquito population to explode and in doing so presents some REAL problems for Rabbits.

Mosquitos are carriers of Myxomatosis which is usual fatal for domestic rabbits. Signs include swollen ears and face and a loss of appetite. No vaccine is available and avoidance via fly-wire around hutches and staying inside at dusk and dawn are the best policies.
For more information, see Our Vet in our Victorian stores.

PET APPEAL FOR QUEENSLAND FLOOD VICTIMS — 14 Jan 2011

Best Friends have set up a Pet Appeal in all stores to help the four legged, furry and feathery friends of the victims of these tragic Queensland floods.

To help just purchase and donate a Best Friends Pet e-Cash gift card and Best Friends will match it to ensure 200% of the donation goes to local shelters and animal welfare organisations.

The biggest issue facing these flood affected pets is evacuation, recovery of lost owners, shelter & containment.  Already animal welfare have been in stores needing crates, collars, leads & food to attend to their charges.

Our thoughts are with all the families and pets affected by this natural disaster.  For other information on how you can help, go to:

Buckley — 02 Nov 2009

In our Thomastown store last month we had a visit from Celebrity Rescue Dog “Buckley” who visited with his new owner, Madeleine after being picked up from The Lost Dogs Home.

Most people would have seen the terrible story about Buckley in the news after he was found abandoned with his ears and tail hacked off in a vicious attack in July.
For those who were following the story of Buckley, the Celebrity Rescue Dog, we’re pleased to report that with the wonderful assistance of our friends at The Lost Dogs Home, Buckley is now part of a loving new family. As part of his welcome Best Friends Pet donated $250 in pet supplies to help Buckley get settled at home.
Animal lovers around the nation were horrified by this act of cruelty, however Buckley’s plight has helped raise the awareness of responsible pet ownership and the Think Adoption First™ message.

For more information on Buckley’s story and to support those who helped him and 100s of other animals in need, contact The Lost Dog Home.

Double trouble – introducing sisters Charlie and Skye — 29 Sep 2009

When Jacqui was looking to add to her four-legged family, she visited her local Best Friends Pet SuperCentre, as she knew that all kittens came from The Lost Dogs' Home.

Having already decided on adopting two kittens, she had trouble choosing from the previously unwanted litters that had come to the Home. “I finally decided on Charlie and Skye, two sisters from the same litter. They are just adorable and I call them ‘my babies’.”

“Skye spends a lot of time gazing up at the sky and is fascinated by birds, so that’s how she got her name. Charlie has a moustache so she is named after Charlie Chaplin. Although they’re sisters, they have such different personalities: Charlie shadows me and is happy to sleep the day away. On the other hand, Skye is very active. She hides from me and carefully watches me from her latest hiding place. They spend hours playing in the garden together and come running like dogs to me when called. They also know when bedtime is and put themselves to bed of an evening.”

At six months old, these girls get into a lot of mischief together.

“My dog Woefies is 15 years old and has limited sight and hearing. Charlie and Skye take advantage of the poor boy and tease him whenever they have the chance. His tail gets pounced on and when he is asleep they sneak up and bat at him with their paws. Woefies takes it in good humour: despite what Charlie and Skye may think, he still rules the roost!”

“I can’t believe that these girls were dumped: they are the cutest, sweetest and funniest kittens and bring me so much happiness.”

Best Friends Pet SuperCentre believes in Think Adoption First. Through our relationship with their three stores, we have been able to significantly increase our adoption rates of cats and kittens, giving thousands of animals like Charlie and Skye a happy new life.

With thanks to The Lost Dogs Home.
